The Biggest Misconception About NDIS Registration

April 17, 2026

If you're considering becoming an NDIS provider, there's one question you're almost certainly asking yourself. "How do I get clients?"

It's the first thing most people want to know. And it makes sense. You're thinking about starting or growing a business, and you need to know where the revenue is going to come from.

But here's where a lot of people get it wrong. And we'd rather tell you the truth now than have you find out the hard way later.

The misconception

A common assumption is that NDIS registration works a bit like a government tender system. You register, your name goes on a list, participants (or their families) browse that list looking for providers, and work comes your way.

Some people imagine it's almost like a job board. Opportunities get posted, you put your hand up, and you're in the running.

This isn't how it works.

The reality

Registration gives you the ability to claim NDIS funding. It doesn't bring participants to your door.

You still need to go out and win business yourself, the same as any other industry. Registration is a licence to operate, not a marketing engine.

When people realise this — sometimes mid-conversation with our team — it can be a bit deflating. Some were hoping this would be easier than building a traditional business. The truth is, the fundamentals still apply.

So what actually works?

Here's something worth thinking about. The providers who have more participants than they can handle aren't necessarily the ones spending the most on marketing.

They're the ones who are genuinely great at what they do.

What does that look like in practice?

  • They know their policies and procedures inside out, and can speak to them confidently when they're sitting across from a participant or their family
  • They present professional, high-quality documentation
  • They understand how to onboard participants properly and manage funding correctly
  • They deliver excellent care, consistently

Think of it like opening a pizza shop. Ads might get someone through the door the first time. If you want repeat business and referrals (which is how NDIS businesses actually grow) you need great pizza.

So what's your recipe for a great NDIS business? If you haven't thought about that yet, you're not ready to worry about marketing.

A different way to think about the investment

When people ask us why working with a registration partner costs more than just submitting an application themselves, this is the answer.

You're not buying a box of nails off the shelf. You're building a foundation.

The investment isn't just in getting registered. It's in partnering with people who can help you think through what your business looks like 12 months from now. Getting the right registration groups. Setting up the right structure. Understanding your policies well enough to actually implement them.

Providers who skip this step often find themselves 12 months down the track realising their structure doesn't fit their business anymore, or they're missing registration groups they now need, or they can't confidently explain their own policies to a prospective participant's family.

Getting it right the first time matters.

Why it's still worth it

None of this is meant to talk you out of becoming a registered provider. Quite the opposite. If you're willing to build the foundation properly, this is a genuine opportunity.

Here's what registration actually gives you.

Access to NDIA-managed participants. There are three ways NDIS participants can manage their funding: NDIA-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed. Unregistered providers can only work with plan-managed and self-managed participants. Registered providers can work with all three groups, including those whose funding is managed directly by the NDIA. Depending on the supports you deliver and the participants you want to work with, this can open up segments of the market that are otherwise closed to you.

Credibility and trust. Registration signals to participants and their families that you've met specific quality and safety standards. It builds confidence before you've even had a conversation.

Visibility through the NDIS Provider Finder. Registered providers can be listed on the official NDIS Provider Finder tool, giving you an additional channel for participants to discover your services.

Direct access to NDIS payment systems. You can manage service bookings and receive payments directly through the NDIS provider portal, which streamlines your admin and cash flow.

Access to NDIS resources and training. Registered providers receive updates, tools, and supplementary training modules from the NDIS Commission that help you stay compliant and improve your service delivery.

A foundation for growth. If you want to scale your business, take on higher-intensity supports, or work with a broader range of participants, registration is the pathway to get there.

Frequently asked questions

Does NDIS registration bring me clients?

No. Registration gives you the ability to claim NDIS funding and work with NDIA-managed participants. It does not automatically connect you with participants or generate leads. You still need to build your business and attract clients yourself.

How do NDIS providers get participants?

The most successful providers attract participants by being excellent at what they do. This means knowing your policies and procedures, presenting professional documentation, onboarding participants properly, and delivering high-quality care. Word of mouth and referrals are how most NDIS businesses grow.

Is NDIS registration like a government tender?

No. Some people assume registration puts you on a list where participants come to you, or that you bid on jobs like a government contract. This is not how the NDIS works. Registration is a licence to operate, not a client acquisition system.

What's the difference between registered and unregistered NDIS providers?

Registered providers can work with all NDIS participants, including those with NDIA-managed funding (around 7% of participants). Unregistered providers can only work with self-managed or plan-managed participants. Registration also provides credibility, access to the NDIS Provider Finder, and direct access to NDIS payment systems.

Why does working with a registration partner cost more than doing it myself?

Because you're not just paying for an application to be submitted. You're investing in getting the right registration groups, setting up the right business structure, and understanding your policies well enough to implement them. Getting this wrong can cost you more in the long run.

What makes a successful NDIS business?

The providers with more participants than they can handle aren't necessarily spending the most on marketing. They know their policies inside out, present professional documentation, onboard participants correctly, and deliver excellent care consistently. Being a great provider is what brings participants.

The bottom line

Registration isn't a shortcut to clients. It is, however, the foundation for building a sustainable, credible NDIS business if you're willing to do the work that actually matters.

The providers who succeed aren't the ones who found some marketing hack. They're the ones who built something worth referring to.

If that sounds like the kind of business you want to build, we should talk.
